Fats and oils are one of the major macronutrients in your diet. They’re used to supply energy and deliver vitamins and other fat-soluble nutrients.

Fats and oils also play a crucial role in how your body functions and can affect your mood, memory, hormones and more.

The fats and oils you eat are made of smaller building blocks known as ‘fatty acids’. There are several families of fatty acids, including the omega-3 fatty acids, omega-6 fatty acids and the omega-9 fatty acids.

Some omega-3s and omega-6s are quite special and are called essential fatty acids, or essential omegas. This is because you can’t make them in your body so it’s essential you get them from food.
