Healthy Fats for Beginners:
How Women Over 40 Can Start Eating Better Today

Starting your journey toward better health doesn’t have to be overwhelming. New to healthy fats? For beginners over 40, small, manageable changes can make a big difference.

I Want to Eat Better — Where Do I Start with Fats?

When you decide it’s time to eat better, it can feel like entering a maze. Do you go low-carb? High protein? Plant-based? Paleo? Intermittent fasting?

If your head spins just thinking about it, you’re not alone.

The truth is, you don’t have to overhaul your entire diet overnight to start seeing real improvements in how you feel. Starting with fats is one of the simplest, most effective steps — and it doesn’t require cooking elaborate meals or counting macros.

Overcoming the Fear of Weight Gain: Why Healthy Fats Won’t Make You Fat

It’s common to worry that eating fat will lead to weight gain — but that fear usually focuses only on calories and overlooks how your metabolism really works. In truth, it’s a myth.

Healthy fats are essential for your body’s overall well-being and can actually support weight management when eaten in the right way.

A drizzle of olive oil can be a revolutionary act. Healthy doesn’t have to mean hard.

How Healthy Fats Actually Help Your Body

Unlike processed, unhealthy fats, quality fats — like those from avocados, nuts and olive oil — help regulate hormones, control appetite and support a healthy metabolism. When you replace low-nutrient fats with nourishing, whole food sources, you help your body work more efficiently.

Of course, overall balance still matters. Paying attention to the mix of fats, proteins and carbs on your plate is important. But by choosing high-quality, functional fats, you’re making every bite count.

So instead of fearing fats, start seeing them as allies — a powerful part of a balanced diet that helps you feel your best.

When you’re beginning to introduce healthy fats and oils into your diet it’s easy to get stuck making lists of foods to eat and avoid. I believe setting out some key, and simple, principles makes for a better approach.

Here are 3 principles for eating better fats and oils:

1. Upgrade the quality of your fats and oils

This can be achieved by focusing on whole, minimally processed fats.

For instance, you might ditch generic vegetable oil which is highly refined and processed and use cold-pressed olive oil or avocado oil instead.

2. Increase the variety of your fats and oils

This can be achieved by choosing different foods that are rich in fat or oil and spreading them across your meals.

  • You could have nut butter on toast or flaxseed in your scrambled eggs at breakfast.
  • A salad with olive oil dressing could accompany your lunch
  • Dinner could feature fish, served alongside a simple stir-fry

3. Make it easy with simple swaps

This is all about finding healthful alternatives to your current choices.

For instance you might replace margarine with butter, or switch from vegetable oils to olive oil.
